NOOP is a free, independent app that reads a WHOOP 4.0, 5.0 or MG strap over Bluetooth and keeps everything on your own Android phone, iPhone or Mac, with no WHOOP account, subscription or cloud. It's installed outside the app stores, it calculates its own Charge, Effort and Rest scores, and it isn't affiliated with WHOOP. The questions below cover everything else.
About NOOP
What is NOOP?
NOOP is a free, independent companion app for WHOOP straps. It connects to a WHOOP 4.0, 5.0 or MG strap over Bluetooth, stores everything on your own phone or Mac, and calculates its own recovery (Charge), strain (Effort) and sleep (Rest) scores on the device, with no WHOOP account and no cloud.
Who makes NOOP?
NOOP is made by an anonymous group of volunteer developers who publish as NoopApp, building on earlier community work that documented how WHOOP straps communicate. The project lives at github.com/ryanbr/noop. This guide site is run separately and isn't part of the project.
Is NOOP free?
Yes. NOOP costs nothing, has no subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads.
Is NOOP open source?
Its full source code is public, under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license. That lets anyone read, run, change and share it for personal and other non-commercial use, but not sell it, which is why the developers call it source-available rather than open source.
Is NOOP the official WHOOP app?
No. NOOP is independent and isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to WHOOP, Inc. The name WHOOP is only used to say which straps it works with.
Do I need a WHOOP membership to use NOOP?
NOOP never signs in to WHOOP, so it doesn't need a WHOOP account to work. You do need a WHOOP strap you own. The developers ask that you only use NOOP with your own device and not in breach of any agreement that applies to you.
Does NOOP bypass any WHOOP login or paywall?
No. NOOP doesn't log in to WHOOP, bypass a paywall or remove any copy protection. It reads data a strap you own sends over Bluetooth, and calculates its own scores from it.
Which languages is the NOOP app available in?
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
Is NOOP a medical device?
No. Its numbers are estimates worked out on your device from published methods. They aren't clinically validated and aren't medical advice.
Straps and devices
Which WHOOP straps work with NOOP?
The WHOOP 4.0 is fully supported: live heart rate, history sync, and Charge, Effort and Rest. The WHOOP 5.0 and MG stream live heart rate today; their deeper sleep and recovery data is still being decoded.
Does NOOP work with the WHOOP 5.0 and MG?
Partly. Live heart rate works and is confirmed on real straps. Recovery, sleep stages, blood oxygen and some other overnight data are still being worked out, so those screens can be empty or rough. Importing your WHOOP export fills in your history.
Does NOOP work with an Oura Ring?
Experimentally, on iPhone and Android. It reads overnight heart rate, Oura's own sleep stages, skin temperature and motion. HRV and breathing rate can't be read from the ring's data. In the standard setup NOOP takes over the ring, so the Oura app can no longer control it until you factory-reset it.
Does NOOP work with other heart-rate straps?
Standard Bluetooth heart-rate straps, such as chest straps, work as an experimental extra: they stream live heart rate and HRV, but not the sleep and recovery data a WHOOP provides.
Which phones and computers can run NOOP?
Android phones with Android 8.0 or newer, iPhones with iOS 17 or newer, and Macs with macOS 13 or newer (Apple silicon or Intel). All need Bluetooth.
Is there a NOOP app for Windows or Linux?
No. On a Windows or Linux computer, install NOOP on your phone instead.
Can I use NOOP on two devices?
You can install it on several, but a strap stays paired with only one device at a time. To move your data between devices, use a backup. See Move NOOP to a new device.
Installing NOOP
Why isn't NOOP on the Play Store or App Store?
Publishing in the stores needs a developer account tied to a real identity, and NOOP's developers keep the project anonymous. So it's installed directly instead: an APK on Android, SideStore or AltStore on iPhone, and a downloaded app on Mac.
Is NOOP safe to install?
The full source code is public, and every download on this site comes from NOOP's official GitHub releases. Your device will still warn you because NOOP isn't signed by a store developer account; that's about the missing signature, not anything in the app. The real risk is fake copies, so only download from the official source.
Why does Play Protect say NOOP is unsafe?
Play Protect flags apps from developers it doesn't know. Tap More details, then Install anyway. If that button is missing, see the other fixes.
Do I need a computer to install NOOP on iPhone?
Only once, to set up SideStore or AltStore. After that, SideStore installs, updates and refreshes NOOP on the phone by itself.
Do I need to jailbreak my iPhone?
No. SideStore and AltStore use Apple's free developer signing with your own Apple ID. Nothing about your iPhone changes.
Why does NOOP stop working on iPhone after 7 days?
Apps signed with a free Apple ID last 7 days. SideStore or AltStore renews them in the background; if it didn't, open it and tap Refresh All. Your data is kept. More
Why does my Mac say NOOP is damaged?
It isn't. NOOP isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS flags the download. Use Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security, or run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/NOOP.app in Terminal. Step by step

Pairing your strap
Why can't NOOP find my strap?
Usually the official WHOOP app is still holding it. Fully close the WHOOP app, wear the strap close to your device, and scan again. A 5.0 or MG also needs pairing mode: tap it until its lights flash blue.
Why isn't my strap in Bluetooth settings?
WHOOP straps don't appear in phone or Mac Bluetooth settings. That's normal. Pair them from inside NOOP.
Can I use NOOP and the WHOOP app at the same time?
Not with one strap at the same moment. The strap keeps its secure link with one app at a time, so while it's paired with NOOP, the WHOOP app won't get its data.
How do I switch back to the WHOOP app?
Close NOOP or turn off Bluetooth on that device, then pair the strap in the WHOOP app again. It may need setting up there from scratch. Your NOOP data stays where it is.
How long does the first sync take?
A few minutes. The strap sends roughly its last two weeks of stored data while it's close to your device. Live heart rate shows straight away.
Your data and privacy
Does NOOP send my data anywhere?
Not unless you set something up to. NOOP has no server, no account and no tracking. The only automatic connection is a daily update check, which sends no health data and can be turned off in Settings → About. Every detail
Does NOOP use analytics or tracking?
No. There are no analytics, crash reporting, ad identifiers or tracking libraries in the app.
Is my data encrypted?
NOOP relies on your device's own encryption (FileVault, iPhone and Android data protection) and keeps its database in private app storage. Backups and exports you make are plain, unencrypted files.
How do I back up NOOP?
On Android, use Backup & Sync with a daily auto-backup. On iPhone and Mac, use Settings → Backup & restore → Export…. Backup guide
Can I import my WHOOP history?
Yes. Request a data export from WHOOP and import the .zip in NOOP's Data Sources. It takes about a minute. Import guide
What does the AI Coach send?
Nothing until you add your own AI provider. Then it sends your question and, only with separate consent, short summaries of recent metrics, straight to the provider you chose. A local model keeps everything on your network.
Scores and numbers
What are Charge, Effort and Rest?
NOOP's three daily scores, each 0 to 100: Charge is recovery, Effort is strain and Rest is sleep. How they work
Why does Charge say Calibrating?
Charge needs at least four nights of HRV to learn your baseline. Don't tap Recalibrate baseline while you wait; it restarts the count. Importing your WHOOP export skips the wait.
What's a good Charge score?
67 or higher is green (well recovered), 34 to 66 is yellow, and under 34 is red. It's relative to your own normal.
Why is NOOP's resting heart rate lower than WHOOP's?
NOOP uses the lowest steady level of your night; WHOOP's figure is closer to your whole-night average. A gap of 5 to 8 bpm is normal.
Why don't NOOP's scores match WHOOP's?
WHOOP's formulas are private. NOOP calculates its own scores with published methods, so they move the same way but rarely match exactly. Days imported from a WHOOP export show WHOOP's own values.
Does NOOP have a Fitness Age or stress score?
Yes: a weekly Fitness Age (a comparison of your fitness with the typical person, not a biological age) and a daily Stress score from 0 to 3. Details
Updates
How do I update NOOP?
On Android, install the new APK over the old one. On iPhone, SideStore or AltStore updates it from NOOP's source. On Mac, replace the app in Applications. Your data stays in every case.
Does NOOP update itself?
No. It checks once a day for a new version and tells you, but it never installs anything. On iPhone, SideStore or AltStore can install updates for you.
Where can I see what changed in each version?
In NOOP's release notes on GitHub, and in the app under What's new after each update.
Are there beta or testing versions?
NOOP's GitHub sometimes has a testing pre-release for people helping to test new changes. Most people should use the stable release linked on this site.
Will updating delete my data?
No. Updating keeps everything. Only uninstalling deletes NOOP's data, because there's no cloud copy.
